According to police officials, the incident happened on June 3 in the jurisdiction of Basavapattana Police Station in Channagiri taluk. The case was brought to light when photographs and videos of the incident began circulating on social media, and relatives of the victim approached the police and filed a complaint.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case and immediately started action, leading to the arrest of 10 people. Senior police officials, including district officials, visited the area and assessed the progress of the investigation.

The woman had already left her house after a domestic dispute and went to her parents' home in a nearby village, according to her initial reports. She met a young man who talked to her and offered her a soft drink, he said.

Investigators are investigating whether the woman was given an intoxicating substance before being transported away from the scene. Police suspect she was later transported to an isolated area where the assault occurred, said the police.

Authorities have not released much information about the victim to protect her identity. The public and media organizations should also not share photographs and videos that could reveal the victim's identity or compromise the ongoing investigation, officials have said.

According to the complaint, the woman was able to reach her relative’s residence and informed family members of the incident. She went to the police station where a formal complaint was filed.

The case has triggered widespread public outrage in the area. A large number of people gathered near the police station to seek swift action against the accused. Police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.

As for the suspects arrested, police have been questioning them and collecting evidence relating to the case. Digital evidence (videos and photos on the internet) is also being examined to determine whether other crimes were committed through their circulation.

The accused will undergo medical examinations as part of the legal process before being taken to court. The police have said further arrests can be made if additional individuals are found to have been involved in the crime or sharing objectionable content online.

A thorough and impartial investigation is ongoing, said officials. The case is still under investigation and government officials are pleading with people not to spread unverified information while legal proceedings continue.

The incident has once again raised concerns about women’s safety and the need for strict enforcement of laws against sexual violence. Police have promised to ensure fairness through a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against those who have been involved.
