The political debate of India’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games has become even more heated with opposition leaders demanding a major change in venue planning. Deepender Singh Hooda, Congress MP, led a high-profile protest across parliament with fellow Haryana parliamentarians Jai Prakash, Varun Mullana, Satpal Brahmachari and Karmbir Bauddh. Haryana should be officially chosen as a host or co-host state for the soon to be held international multi-sport event, the delegation said, but the region’s great sporting achievements need to be given a lot of attention.
In the demonstration, the lawmakers shouted loud and proud slogans about the state's athletic power and the current idea to move the event elsewhere. And the main argument was that Haryana’s legacy of producing world-class medal winners is that, despite the smaller population than other states, Haryana has consistently delivered the highest share of India’s podium places among the world’s top global events like the Olympics, Asian Games and previous editions of the Commonwealth Games.
The national government has previously indicated that Gujarat could be the focal point of the 2030 Games bid, including Ahmedabad. This approach would be consistent with federal efforts to build world-class sports infrastructure and increase India’s long-term Olympic hosting capacity. But Haryana wants to make it clear that focusing on regions with no established sporting heritage ignores the fact that sports playing on a national basis is largely the province that drives the country’s performance.
Hooda added that the state has earned the reputation as the country’s largest sporting leader in terms of demand. Local athletes have long dominated wrestling, boxing, shooting, hockey, track-and-field events, lawmakers said. Using that established athletic culture and building upon existing regional facilities, they argue that making Haryana a major host or co-host would honor the country’s athletes who keep coming back with games on the global stage and bring pride to the nation.
