The accident also killed three people and injured eight others when two cars collided head-on on the Delhi-Lucknow Highway.
According to investigators, the accident occurred when the two vehicles, traveling in opposite directions, collided with massive force. Many of the vehicles’ occupants were trapped in the accident, the report says. Witnesses said the accident was violent: debris was scattered across the road and traffic was stopped.
As soon as the accident happened, police teams, ambulance services, and rescue personnel arrived at the site. Rescuers used technical equipment to help passengers who were trapped in the mangled vehicles. The injured were immediately sent to hospitals to receive emergency medical care, and the bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination following legal processes.
Three people died in the accident, and eight others were injured in varying degrees of severity, according to officials in the area. Some of these were in critical condition and are being treated in intensive hospital care, they said. Hospital personnel reported monitoring the condition of the seriously injured and providing all necessary treatment.
Police have started an investigation into what was the cause of the collision. Preliminary evidence indicates that overspeeding, driver error, lane indiscipline, bad visibility, or an attempt to overtake could have caused the crash. But police said they will only be able to know the full sequence of events after a full investigation and analysis of evidence from the accident site.
The Delhi-Lucknow Highway traffic was disrupted for a few hours following the collision. Police diverted cars to other routes as rescue operations and the removal of damaged cars were carried out by the police, and all the cars were removed from the areas. Highway authorities tried to clear the debris and get back to normal traffic as soon as possible, highway authorities said.
Road accidents are still a huge public safety problem in India. Heavy traffic on national highways is daily, and experts often stress the need to keep safe driving, have seat belts on, avoid distracted driving, and keep cars moving at the speed limit (in a safe manner). Defensive driving and compliance with traffic laws can reduce the number of serious accidents, they said.
Local residents who witnessed the incident were among the first to assist before emergency services arrived. Many bystanders also helped passengers out of the damaged vehicles and called police and ambulance services. The response of the community is appreciated, officials said, because early intervention can save lives in an emergency.
The tragic event has left families and communities in deep mourning. Relatives rushed to hospitals after receiving news of the accident, friends and local residents expressed grief over the sudden loss of life. Messages of condolence also circulated on social media, and people advocated for better road safety measures and tougher traffic laws.
Transportation safety experts believe that road infrastructure, better driver awareness, regular vehicle inspections, and enforcement of traffic laws are critical to reducing fatal highway accidents. The public needs to get better awareness on speeding, reckless driving, and fatigue behind the wheel, and so are recommended in public awareness campaigns regularly, they say.
Authorities have also advised drivers traveling on highways to be extra cautious, especially on long-distance routes. Drivers should obey traffic rules, avoid risky overtaking maneuvers, remain alert, and take adequate rest during extended trips to minimize the risk of accidents, the government said.

It is to be expected that as the investigation continues, police will investigate witness statements, vehicle conditions, and any available surveillance footage to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision. Details will reveal themselves after the investigation is over.
That one of the Delhi-Lucknow Highway crashes is another sorrowful reminder of road safety and responsible driving. The police continue to investigate; we must help those who have been injured; help the families who lost their loved ones; we need to do something more to prevent such incidents in the future.
