Delhi-NCR braced for another spell of heavy rainfall today (September 5) as continuous showers on Friday had caused widespread waterlogging, traffic gridlock and commuter distress in several parts of the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall alerts for Delhi and neighbouring areas, and residents should be cautious: thunderstorms, lightning and rain are expected at different times of the day.
The weather department has forecast generally cloudy skies with moderate rainfall in Delhi on Saturday. The fresh spell of rain comes as the National Capital Region continues to cope with the impact of Friday's downpour.
Heavy rain likely over Delhi-NCR.
The independent weather forecaster Navdeep Dahiya warned about heavy rainfall across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad from Saturday afternoon to late evening. Heavy showers in parts of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh may also occur.
According to Dahiya, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad could receive 60 to 140 mm of rainfall by midnight on September 5, while Delhi and Gurugram may record about 30 to 80 mm during the same period.
There are likely to be intermittent showers through the first half of Saturday, and heavier rains will likely be in the afternoon. Such heavy rainfall can cause fresh waterlogging, slow-moving traffic, and road delays on key roads.
The residents of low-lying parts of the city are likely to face increased risk because drainage systems are under pressure during heavy rain. Residents in low-lying areas are also warned to stay alert as drainage systems are under pressure during heavy rainfall and to be ready to evacuate in case of torrential rain.
Delhi weather forecast for the coming days
The IMD has forecast that Delhi will remain mostly cloudy on September 5, with moderate rain expected, and temperatures will be between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Humidity will be high, ranging from 70 to 95 per cent.
On September 6, cloudy conditions are expected to persist, and there will be light rain or drizzle is possible. The minimum temperature may be around 23 degrees Celsius, and the maximum could be 32 degrees Celsius.
From September 7 onwards, Delhi may experience partly cloudy skies. The temperature is expected to remain around 24-34 degrees Celsius on September 7 and 25-34 degrees Celsius on September 8. Similar weather could be expected on September 9, with temperatures between 26 and 34 degrees Celsius.
On September 10, partly cloudy conditions could continue, and temperatures will be between 25 and 34 degrees Celsius.
With more rain forecast throughout the NCR, residents must be prepared to be alert to weather updates and allow additional travel time, especially in the afternoon and evening when heavier rain is expected.
