Dense Fog Causes Fatal 20-Vehicle Pile-Up on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway; 4 Confirmed Dead

A tragic accident unfolded on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway this morning, resulting in a massive pile-up involving dozens of vehicles and claiming the lives of four individuals. The incident, which occurred near the Bharatpur stretch in Rajasthan, is being attributed primarily to the severely dense fog that drastically reduced visibility on the high-speed corridor.

Details of the Catastrophe

The fatal incident took place around 7:00 AM when the region was blanketed in heavy winter fog, creating near-zero visibility conditions.

  • Victims: Four people have been confirmed dead, and several others sustained injuries, some of them serious. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention.
  • Scale of Accident: Initial reports suggest that approximately 20 vehicles, including cars, trucks, and possibly buses, were involved in the chain-reaction collision, with vehicles ramming into each other at high speeds due to the drivers' inability to react quickly in the thick fog.

Cause: Fog and High Speed

Police and highway patrol teams arriving at the scene confirmed that the sudden and dense patch of fog was the main catalyst. Drivers, likely traveling at high speeds common on the expressway, had little to no time to brake once they saw the first collision, leading to the massive pile-up.

Emergency services faced significant challenges in conducting rescue and recovery operations amidst the wreckage and continued poor visibility.

Safety Advisory Issued

Following the accident, authorities have issued a severe warning and advisory to motorists:

  • Reduce Speed: Drivers are strictly advised to reduce speed drastically when driving on expressways during early morning hours.
  • Use Hazard Lights: Use fog lights and hazard lights to increase visibility to other motorists.
  • Maintain Distance: Maintain a significantly larger distance from the vehicle ahead than usual.

The accident has once again underscored the critical danger of driving on high-speed highways during dense winter fog conditions across North India. An investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of collisions and the identities of the deceased.
