The long-standing demand for a direct railway connection from Dharmasthala to coastal Karnataka has gained attention again in coastal Karnataka, with devotees and residents anxious for a new route out of Mangaluru, Ujire, Dharmasthala, and Subrahmanya.
Dharmasthala is one of the most popular pilgrimage areas in Karnataka and is a popular tourist attraction. Although the temple is a large tourist attraction, there is no railway station there for the pilgrimage centre. So passengers generally drive on the road from nearby railway stations to reach the pilgrimage centre.
The proposed railway connection is discussed in the context of improving transport infrastructure in Dakshina Kannada and better access to the major religious and tourist destinations.
Demand for Mangaluru-Ujire-Dharmasthala Rail Link
Through a Ujire and Dharmasthala direct rail link, devotees travelling from Mangaluru and other parts of Karnataka will benefit significantly from the direct rail connection. The railway connection will reduce reliance on road transportation, in particular for festivals and pilgrimage seasons, and those who believe that this is a good idea and it will reduce reliance on road transportation.
One possible approach is to connect the existing railway network near Subrahmanya Road with Dharmasthala and other important locations. Other proposals have also addressed railway connections between Ujire, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya Road.
In July 2024, Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna had said that new railway connectivity to the Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala pilgrimage centres was being considered.
More recently, railway infrastructure discussions in coastal Karnataka have continued to include the possibility of new lines connecting Karkala, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya Road.
Existing Subrahmanya Road Connectivity
Subrahmanya Road is already an important railway access point for pilgrims visiting Kukke Subrahmanya. In April 2025, the Railway Ministry extended passenger services from Mangaluru Central and Kabaka Puttur to Subrahmanya Road. The extension was described by the Ministry as an improvement for daily commuters and pilgrims visiting Kukke Subrahmanya.
This existing connection could be a powerful basis for discussions of further rail links towards Dharmasthala.
The Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road section has also seen major infrastructure improvements. Indian Railways electrified the challenging ghat section in December 2025, making the Bengaluru-Mangaluru line fully electrified. The Railway Ministry said the improvement would enable electric trains to operate on the route and faster services on the route.
Why is the Dharmasthala railway connection important?
A railway line to Dharmasthala would have more implications beyond pilgrimage travel. The region has a very good tourism economy, and many people visit temples, heritage sites, and natural places in coastal and Malnad Karnataka.
More rail connections might also provide a better rail link for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, transport operators and tourism businesses, as well as tourism-related activities. It could also offer students, workers and residents getting to and from coastal towns, and workers and residents traveling to coastal areas and other parts of the state as well.
On festival days and weekends, road traffic towards pilgrimage sites can be high. A good railway connection would bring another mode of transportation and could relieve pressure on highways.
Project Still Must Be Formally Approved
The demand has received attention from public representatives and railway stakeholders, but it is important to distinguish a proposed railway connection from a formally sanctioned railway project.
A new railway line would thus need detailed surveys, feasibility assessment, funding approval, land acquisition and other statutory clearances. Railway projects may also be subject to geographical conditions, environmental requirements and other technical aspects.
The Railway Ministry has previously noted that factors such as land acquisition, forest clearance, utility shifting, statutory approvals and geological conditions can influence the timeline and cost of railway projects.
For devotees and residents of the region, we expect that a detailed proposal for a Mangaluru-Ujire-Dharmasthala-Subrahmanya rail connection will be seriously considered.
Until a formal sanction and project timeline is announced, the proposed railway should be viewed as a connectivity demand and project under discussion, rather than an approved railway line.
