Karnataka government unveiled a series of major initiatives on Thursday as Deputy Chief Minister and state political leader D K Shivakumar marked 100 days in office. The measures are on digital governance, agriculture, public transport, housing, environmental protection and welfare and are the state government's effort to build a better society and better public services.
Among the key announcements were the launch of Seva One, a unified digital platform for connecting various government services to one interface to form a single platform, to connect the government services together and connect government departments. This is the “One Government, One Digital” approach to the issue, which is called a “One Government, One Digital” platform to make it easy for citizens to access services, request services and submit requests and communicate with government departments without the need to access multiple systems.
The government said the digital initiative is meant to make public services more accessible and convenient. If you put all these services in one place, it would reduce the need for citizens to go to different government offices and reduce interactions between citizens and departments, and reduce the friction between residents and departments, they say.
Farmer-Focused Raitha Chaitanya Scheme
Agriculture was another major focus of the initiatives announced during the 100-day milestone. The Chief Minister Raitha Chaitanya scheme was launched with the stated objective of helping farmers make agriculture more profitable through timely and location-specific advice.
The scheme was introduced initially in Mandya, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Hassan and Shivamogga. The government has proposed expanding the initiative to other districts in Karnataka.
Based on the local environment, the focus on location-specific agricultural advice is to help farmers make better decisions. Information at a certain point in time can be very useful in crop management, farming and for responding to changing agricultural conditions.
BMTC 2.0 App To Improve Bus Travel
Urban mobility was also mentioned in government announcements of the government. The BMTC 2.0 mobile application has been developed as well to provide Bengaluru commuters with a range of digital services.
The application will allow passengers to track buses in real-time, see when they will be arriving and going, purchase tickets online and use a wallet facility. It will also support a multimodal journey planner so commuters can plan trips using different forms of public transport.
The other major feature will be ticketing between BMTC buses and Namma Metro. The application will also have daily, weekly and monthly pass options, making public transport more convenient for regular commuters.
One Karnataka Mobility App
The state government also launched One Karnataka Mobility App, KSRTC Avatara 2.0, aimed to bring bus booking services operated by Karnataka's four state transport corporations into a single digital platform.
Passengers will be able to book buses through the application as well as WhatsApp. The platform will also provide access to KSRTC and Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation tour packages.
Digital monthly passes are another feature to be implemented as part of the initiative. The aim is to have a more integrated transport ecosystem in which all the passengers have access to different services from one platform.
Five Lakh Housing Sites To Be Distributed
Housing was another big component of government's announcements. Karnataka introduced a scheme to distribute five lakh housing sites to people who do not have a house or residential site.
The initiative is particularly targeted at beneficiaries in rural areas. It will help the government to provide those families with residential plots and greater security and dignity,” it said.
The housing-site initiative could become one of the most significant welfare measures among the announcements, given the demand for affordable residential land among economically vulnerable households.
Cleaner Vehicles And Sainik Samman
With the introduction of a Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) for diesel vehicles in the government’s efforts to curb vehicular emissions, it is also the first step in the direction of cleaner mobility and less pollution of diesel-powered vehicles.
Other than mobility and environmental measures, the government announced the Sainik Samman scheme which aims to recognise and support the armed forces community.
Collectively, the seven initiatives launched around the 100-day milestone cover several areas of public policy in terms of digital governance, agriculture, transport, housing, environmental protection and welfare.
Karnataka government introduced the measures as part of its commitment to “equal opportunity and inclusive development”. And the government is also looking to use technology more in everyday interactions in society with the public institutions in Seva One and mobility applications.
As the government moves beyond the 100-day mark, implementation will be the key test for these programmes. The expansion of the Raitha Chaitanya scheme, delivery of housing sites to eligible beneficiaries and adoption of the new mobility platforms will determine how effectively the announced initiatives translate into benefits for residents across Karnataka.
