The political drama in Karnataka has intensified today as the debate over a possible change in leadership continues. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru, a day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held his own discussions with the party high command. This back‑to‑back set of meetings has fueled speculation that the Congress may soon take a decision on whether to implement the power‑sharing agreement of 2023, which suggested a rotation of the Chief Minister’s post after two and a half years.
Siddaramaiah, speaking earlier in the day, urged the Congress leadership to clear the air and end the confusion. He said both he and Shivakumar would abide by whatever decision the high command makes, but acknowledged that MLAs loyal to Shivakumar are free to express their opinions in Delhi. Reports confirm that over 15 legislators from Shivakumar’s camp have already reached Delhi, pressing for his elevation to the top post.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar’s meeting with Kharge today is being closely watched. Observers say it could be a routine consultation, but given the timing, it is widely seen as part of the ongoing tussle. Supporters of Shivakumar, especially from the Vokkaliga community, have been vocal in demanding that he be given the Chief Minister’s chair. Religious rituals and prayers have also been performed by his followers in Karnataka and Kerala, symbolizing their hopes for his rise.
The Congress high command now faces the challenge of balancing internal pressures with the need for stability in Karnataka. A decision is expected soon, as both camps continue to lobby hard.
