Doc’s Locks Museum Shows Giant Antique Padlock. In Ahmedabad, Gujarat there is a unique museum and on social media it is now a hot name with more than 2,000 locks from over 50 countries. There is one great antique padlock and for many years it has been displayed and soon there won't be one without it in the museum. However, what makes this museum even more special is that it is located inside the resident house of a physician who has opened his passion project to the public.
Doc’s Locks Museum is not a typical museum. It’s organized around the personal collection of a doctor who has gathered locks from all over the world and used them in his and her collection. The collection presents locks of all shapes and sizes and mechanisms - from padlocks that make one simple and easy to identify to those made to work in temples (for centuries), forts (until now) and in prison (until recently not yet). Everything about a lock tells a story of something of art, man and science and how security has grown and developed.
The newly demonstrated large, antique padlock is a focal point of our museum, as the museum is dedicated to the history of locks. What I could understand was people getting so surprised at its size at times, the creativity and that the design was of earlier times.
Locks are everyday tools that make up very little of society and, yet, with some cultural and historical pedigree. They represent trust, safety and ingenuity. The museum exhibits the world’s approach by collecting and displaying them in a different format and with different aims.
The presence of locks from more than 50 countries also makes the museum a global archive which connects India to global cultures of culture. It teaches us things like a lock, simple locks as such serve us as a bridge between those cultures that can bind peoples and keep us together.
The museum is open to all of the visitors, who can tour the doctor's residence and the collection there. For an audience member, a wide array of locks in one space can be quite striking for many. The museum does allow one perspective of the artwork behind the things you own and don’t really think about for many years because of its utilitarian character but can add visual layers when you go and look at them out there.
Visitors and locals both have lauded the museum for its unique feel (and the way that people in Ahmedabad know it). It’s unique because it’s so different from art or history museums and adds to the culture in the city itself.
Finally, Doc’s Locks Museum in Ahmedabad is more than any other locks collection; it's a place on which history and technology and human creativity come to rest in a big-picture and a big, powerful way. And the museum, as big as one big antique padlock and so many other exhibits, does a beautiful job of helping to make the mundane look better through the eyes of one of the most ordinary things that people see most everyday (in everyday terms). And so for our world the story is at once so much easier to see: that even the simplest gadgets as are their stories of culture, invention and connection are at the heart of the museum across the country.
