The country has lost a great pillar of education and public service with the death of Padma Shri Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil who died on Monday from old age. He was a visionary educationist and philanthropist who was also Governor of Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal. And so this period of Indian private education has ended; it is the end of the road as far as he is concerned in terms of access to professional learning.
Born on October 22, 1935, Dr. Patil spent his life trying to expand education and contribute to the betterment of society. Under his leadership, the D. Y. Patil Group became one of the country’s largest and most extensive private education networks with more than 182 schools, a number of universities and top international schools and a number of multi-specialty hospitals. In the last 50 years, these institutions have impacted the careers and futures of hundreds of thousands of students and educated them in medicine, engineering, management, agriculture and many other fields.
Dr. Patil had a well-known and distinguished political career beyond his immense contribution to academic life. He served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and in the public interest before becoming governor. He took his experience in administration and public service to the top state positions as Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal and was praised for his leadership ability, administrative skills and dedication to fostering regional development.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991 for his contributions to education and social welfare by the Government of India. The many colleges, universities and health centres he founded since he was the founding father in Maharashtra are now among the top centers of excellence and have produced generations of skilled professionals with great achievements in various sectors of the Indian economy.
Dr. Patil leaves behind a grieving family and a deep and lasting institutional legacy. His work will probably continue to influence and inspire students, educators, healthcare professionals and public officials in the country’s future.
