A Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus caught fire in the Dwarka area of the capital and panic erupted among the passengers and bystanders.
The entire crew and the driver managed to escape safely from the burning vehicle before any casualties were reported, and the fire spread to the vehicle; all passengers and the driver were safe, they added.
The incident occurred during regular operating hours when smoke could be seen from the bus. Within minutes the smoke turned into a huge fire and almost everything inside it was destroyed. The Delhi Fire Service and local police rushed to the scene immediately.
Firefighters were on the scene very quickly to put the fire out. Social media videos and images showed thick black smoke shooting from the burning bus and traffic in the area was heavy.

The driver noticed something was wrong that the bus might need to stop and instructed passengers to get off immediately. His quick action likely prevented a tragedy.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. A short circuit or mechanical problem is suspected but the final cause will be confirmed with the technical examination of the vehicle. The burnt bus was moved for forensic examination.
