Mahindra Thar driver tried to escape a police crackdown, police said, after officers saw the SUV with tinted windows in the Shivar Chowk area of the Pimple Saudagar police commissionerate (PCMC) area of the country.
The incident was reported as the vehicle was being stopped during a vehicle check when police saw the tint and began to check the SUV. Police said the vehicle had illegally tinted windows and also had just the number “77” in large letters on the number plate, which raised even more suspicion during the enforcement.
The unusual number plate attracted police officers, who attempted to stop the vehicle for verification. But instead of complying with the police instructions, the driver allegedly tried to escape from the spot. The Mahindra Thar rammed into a two-wheeler and continued moving despite police personnel. Police also alleged that the driver pushed police personnel with the vehicle while attempting to make his way out of the area.
Immediately, police moved in to stop the SUV from escaping. Police teams followed up on the chase and traced the SUV driver and caught him. The driver was traced and arrested by the police. A case has since been registered at Kalewadi Police Station in connection with the incident.
The episode has raised road-safety and vehicle-compliance issues, including the enforcement of vehicle number plates and tinted windows. Vehicle registration plates should be linked to a vehicle and information should be disclosed during traffic enforcement. Any non-standard or ambiguous registration may lead to concerns among police.
Tinted windows, of course, are more or less designed to make it clear for vehicles to be visible as well as road safety and law enforcement. Excessively dark window films or unlawful tinting that is too heavily tinted may not be visible to authorities in a car during a regular check.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the alleged attempt to evade the checkpoint. The investigation will look at the sequence of events (the two-wheeler collision and the police personnel being pushed by the SUV). They may also check the car’s registration details and whether the number plate was in line with the law.
The tinting in the window of the car will also be examined and the legality of this will be investigated as well. There may be more violations that were made outside of the initial check by law enforcement personnel. The police will also investigate what happened and any damage or injuries associated with the collision to see if there are any injuries or damage.
