New Delhi: In a major development in the current undergraduate admission season, Delhi University (DU) has given special permission to two of its affiliated colleges to admit undergraduate students through a merit-based physical admission process. The move falls under the university’s largely centralized online admission model and does not jeopardize the students’ chances of being admitted if they are eligible and if they happen to be in need of admission.
Delhi University has been doing undergraduate admissions mainly via the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) linked to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG). The students register online, submit their preferences, and are allocated seats based on CUET scores, category, and college preferences. The new decision, however, allows for two colleges to do admissions physically while maintaining the principle of merit.
Exception to the Online Admission Process
The approval is a special arrangement and does not signal any change in the general admissions policy, university officials said. Colleges have to be transparent and apply merit in their admissions process, they said.
The permission has been granted to address administrative or operational problems in those colleges which prevented them from filling undergraduate seats through the usual online allocation rounds. DU will use vacant seats without compromising fairness and academic standards by allowing physical admissions.
Officials said only those who had the academic and admission qualifications would be considered. The admission process will be merit-driven, and documents and eligibility conditions will be valid, they said.
Relief for Eligible Students
So for students who might have been unable to get a seat easily in the online rounds, the decision offers a fresh opportunity to secure admission in Delhi University. Physical rounds of admissions will be of particular benefit for students who were unable to participate effectively in the online counselling process due to technical or other unavoidable reasons.
Education experts believe such flexibility can help universities maximize seat occupancy while ensuring deserving students have access to quality higher education.
But aspirants have been advised not to assume that all colleges will follow the same procedure. The university has made it clear that this permission applies only to the specified colleges and should not be interpreted as a university-wide policy.
Importance of Merit-Based Admissions
Merit-based admissions remain the cornerstone of Delhi University’s undergraduate admission process. Even when admissions are conducted physically, institutions are expected to prepare merit lists, verify academic records, and comply with reservation norms and university guidelines.
The university has also said there should be no compromise on transparency or fairness. Students in the physical mode should have all the necessary documents (CUET scorecards, Class 12 mark sheets, identity proof, category certificates where applicable, and other documents to verify their admission).
DU's Evolving Admission Framework
Over the last few years, Delhi University has revamped its admission system through digital platforms. CUET-based admission has standardized undergraduate admission in central universities and replaced the previous Class 12 marks-based system as a more standardized admission system.
While the centralized online system has increased efficiency and transparency, universities occasionally need to make a small degree of flexibility to deal with operational problems. DU's recent decision is a reminder of how the administrative efficiency of the university is at stake at the same time as student welfare.
