Extended Park Hours in Bengaluru South Zone to Combat Immorality and Boost Engagement

The Bengaluru South Zone of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a significant change in the operating hours of public parks within its jurisdiction. The decision, taken in response to numerous complaints from the public and local legislators regarding unethical activities and illegal occurrences, aims to keep the parks more actively "engaged" by the community.

The revised schedule sees an extension of one hour each for both the morning and evening access periods.

The Key Changes in Timings

Previously, the public access to parks was restricted to:

  • Morning: 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM

The new, extended schedule is as follows:

Period Old Timing New Timing Extension
Morning 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM 1 Hour
Evening 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (Implied) 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM 1 Hour

This change means the public will now have access to the parks until 11:00 AM in the morning and up to 8:00 PM in the evening.

Reasoning Behind the Decision

The BBMP South Zone Commissioner issued the directive following persistent complaints from local residents and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The primary objective is to increase the presence of general citizens in the parks for longer durations, which is expected to act as a deterrent against anti-social and illegal behavior.

The Commissioner stated that the adjustment in timings was a direct consequence of the public demand to curb such activities and ensure a safer, more welcoming environment for all park users.

It was also clarified that the remaining hours of the day, when the parks are closed to the public, will be strictly utilized for park maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep activities.
