On Tuesday morning commuters and local people from Mumbai’s busy Churchgate district of the town were treated to a bizarre sight when the French president, Emmanuel Macron in his athletic equipment, went for a run. The President decided to go out for an outdoor exercise instead of going to a hotel gym despite the increasing humidity and 11:00 AM sun as he jogged between the landmarks of the financial capital.
A Run Through the "Maximum City"
President Macron is in India at AI Impact Summit 2026, where world leaders are talking about the ethical and economic implications of AI. But the President appeared keen to feel the pulse of Mumbai in real time. Flanked by a narrow, unobtrusive group of French and Indian security guards, Macron can be seen jogging past the Gothic and Art Deco buildings that comprise the Churchgate and Marine Drive precinct.
At a public roadblock, passersby who had no idea that the VIP was nearby, discovered immediately that they were witnessing a world leader stride through an assembly, and there were a few who decided to reach out to social media to post bits of the "Presidential Jog."
Diplomatic Fitness
It’s not the first time Macron has showcased his love of outdoor sports on diplomatic trips. Renowned for his “Stamina Diplomacy,” the French President frequently employs these runs as a way to relax between intense bilateral appointments. "It was surreal," said a local student, who was headed to a nearby college. "You see the convoys and the barricades for the summit and all of a sudden, it’s the President of France running by you like any other morning jogger. He seemed really focused but gave one quick nod to a few people who knew him."

The AI Impact Summit
France and India look to deepen their partnership in the technology arena and the President’s visit is of special importance. Macron is also set to deliver his keynote address today at the summit, which speaks on:
- Collaborative AI Research: The fusion of French tech hubs and Indian startup companies.
- Digital Sovereignty: To continue developing AI in ways that are ethical and respect citizens’ privacy.
- Climate Tech: AI to tackle urban-ecological problems something similar to what he did for a run through Mumbai’s dense urban landscape.
Mumbai’s Warm Welcome
The Mumbai Police had arranged a “rolling security” programme to ensure the President’s safety without blocking the city’s traffic flow in the busy South Mumbai district. After his run, Macron reportedly went back to his hotel to get ready for the diplomatic sessions by afternoon.
As India and France continue to navigate the complexities of the 21st century, moments like these where a world leader directly engages with the rhythm of an Indian city serve as a daily reminder of the human factor behind the high-level policy that's hidden just in our midst.
