Two firefighters were killed and five others were injured when a wall collapsed during firefighting operations as they were battling a huge fire in an electronic manufacturing plant in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, just north of Delhi.
The fire started in the electronics manufacturing facility in Greater Noida. Smoke and large flames quickly spread around the building, which sent fire tenders to the scene, and firefighters worked day and night to control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby industrial facilities, officials said.
During the operation, a part of the wall of the factory collapsed and some firefighters were trapped by the debris. Rescue teams and other firefighters immediately launched an emergency operation to pull the trapped personnel out of the rubble.
Two firefighters died in spite of rescue efforts to save them and five were seriously injured and were transported to a hospital in the area, officials said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Early investigations suggest electronic equipment or flammable materials in the electronics manufacturing unit may have been responsible for the quick spread of the fire.
A forensic investigation has begun to determine the cause of the fire and assess whether safety precautions were taken and done properly.
Fire Department and district administration officials got to the site soon after the fire. They supervised rescue operations and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased firefighters. They also guaranteed that there would be a thorough investigation of the wall collapse and the overall structural safety of the factory.
It has again raised questions about the safety of industrial fire safety in manufacturing establishments. Electronic manufacturing plants frequently store combustible materials, chemicals, batteries, and electronic components that can increase fires if safety measures are not maintained.
