Gujarat Well Water Oscillates Mysteriously in Morbi District After Heavy Rains

One of the most odd and unusual phenomena of the agrarian landscape of Gujarat recently happened in the countryside which was of interest to people and scientists alike. A farmer Pranjivanbhai Sadariya in the 18-foot-deep agricultural well of a man known as Pranjivanbhai Sadariya, who is a farmer, was not only a farmer. The well which is located in Virparda village, the water was flooded with heavy monsoon rains in early August and so the water went into high turbid water, oscillating and sloshing continuously in a rhythmic motion, which has made it a mystery to the public and the community.

As soon as this strange phenomenon was reported, geologists in the region and local government officials immediately began investigating the reason behind the turbulent water. Initially some of the scientists saw a few possible scientific reasons such as trapped underground natural gas or the rare hydrological phenomenon of a well seiche. A well seiche happens when seismic waves or rapid changes in the barometric pressure and water pressure in an underground vertical shaft resonate and oscillate back and forth. Seismological monitoring indicated that no earthquakes had ever happened in the region during the period which ruled out direct seismic earthquakes and pointed to the behavior of pressure on the subsurface in aquifer systems.

The local authorities were not only consulting and assessing local water quality but the whole scientific investigation was done in the name of the Ground Water Research Institute. Hydrologists and geologists were on site to determine the water quality, pressure variations in the surrounding water table and whether any gas pockets were coming up through the well shaft. Local administration officials asked local residents and the huge crowds gathered at the site to stay away and not spread any unconfirmed rumor of a disaster. As the researchers continue to investigate and monitor the underground environment the incident is a reminder of the far-reaching and often unpredictable hydrological forces that lie below the surface of the earth.
