A high-speed BMW crash on Mumbai’s Coastal Road left three college students dead and another critically injured early Sunday morning. The accident took place at around 5:20 am on September 20 when the luxury car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali.
According to police, the BMW was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control close to Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College. The vehicle crashed through the outer barrier of the elevated road before falling from a bridge into an under-construction parking site below. The car was heavily damaged in the collision.
The driver appeared to have difficulty negotiating a turn at the location, police said. “The car was at a high speed. The driver couldn’t understand the turn and crashed into the outer railing, and then the car plunged from the bridge,” said police. The circumstances of the crash were under investigation.
Three Students Die in the Crash
All four occupants of the BMW were rushed to the civic-run Nair Hospital after the accident. Three of them were dead, with the fourth one admitted to the trauma ward in critical condition.
The victims were identified in later reports as Shanay Gajjar, 21, Aditya Jakasania, 19, and Dhairya Sheth, 17. Another occupant, identified in reports as Aditya Oswal, 23, was also critically injured and was taken to hospital for treatment. Early reports had different information about the ages and identities of the victims as authorities were still deciding the facts.

Police said the students were from Ahmedabad and studying in Mumbai. Some of the victims were doing management studies, while Sheth was also a college student, reports said. Gajjar's family owned the BMW, according to reports.
Such an accident has left the families and friends of the students in shock. Police have informed the families and are recording statements from friends and witnesses as part of the investigation.
CCTV Captures Moment of Crash
The CCTV footage has emerged as an important part of the investigation. It allegedly shows the BMW travelling at high speed before hitting the outer section of the elevated Coastal Road and breaking through the barrier.
According to the reports, the car plunged about 75 feet from the elevated section into the construction area below. The fall caused extensive damage to the vehicle.
Police are reviewing the footage and other evidence to establish exactly what happened in the crash, the police said. They will also examine the vehicle and any evidence available as part of the investigation, they said.
A later report from Hindustan Times said police thought that the BMW may have been travelling at about 120 kmph compared to a speed limit of 80 kmph on the main carriageway, which was enforced at the time. That figure is part of the police investigation and is not yet a final assessment of the car’s speed.
