Habiba Jaffrey Files ₹16.24 Crore FIR in Bandra Redevelopment Scam

Habiba Jaffrey, Jaaved Jaaferi’s wife, has filed an FIR against Jaaved Jaaferi for fraud after she is alleged to have been cheated of ₹16.24 crore in connection with a redevelopment project in the Bandra area of Mumbai. Senior civic officials and businessmen have been involved in the case, too.

Habiba accused BMC Assistant Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Patil and five others of luring her into investing in the project by promising large returns and profits. She continued her complaint by saying forged and fabricated documents were used as part of the scheme, which she said was a major problem as it would point to corruption and malpractice in redevelopment projects.

After the allegations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suspended Mahesh Patil on June 5, and the suspension order was issued on June 7. However, reports suggest that the suspended officer has been absconding since the FIR was registered, and this makes the investigation difficult.

The case also led to the arrest of businessman Nishit Patel, who was presented before a court and remanded to police custody, too. Police will now investigate the alleged involvement of the fraudster in the scheme and track the flow of money and identify other people involved and find out how much money was made.

This has reignited the debate in Mumbai on transparency and accountability in redevelopment projects. Bandra is a city of high-value real estate and always a center for redevelopment, but such cases show that investors and residents are at risk. The problem is that more oversight and regulation is necessary to prevent such scams, especially in the presence of public officials.

All the details are still forthcoming as the investigation continues. For Habiba Jaffrey, it is not only a financial setback; it is also a fight for justice against power abuse and fraud. For Mumbai, it is the kind of case that highlights the need for integrity in redevelopment projects that shape the city’s future.
