Mach Manja, known as a notorious rowdy-sheeter who had been absconding after attacking police and threatening them with ruin, has been arrested by a special police team. He was arrested near the Maharashtra border after a two-day manhunt by district police.
The incident that triggered widespread public outrage reportedly happened on Sunday night at Maurya Bar in Haliyal town. Mach Manja was reportedly drinking an alcoholic beverage at the bar and had a row with the officers at the time, creating chaos at the venue, police sources said. He is accused of attacking police officers and threatening them with death, creating a tense situation at the venue.
The case was serious enough, but allegations began to emerge that local police did not take action against the accused initially. They were only taken seriously when a video of the alleged assault began circulating on social media and was picked up by media outlets. Public criticism was expressed, and the police faced backlash.
After the video was broadcast, Superintendent of Police Deepan took swift action against officers accused of negligence. Haliyal Police Station PSI Basavaraj was suspended from service, and eight other police personnel were transferred as part of departmental action. It was a move to restore public trust and to show that police officers were held accountable.
With pressure mounting, officials formed a special police team to track and arrest the absconding rowdy-sheeter. The detectives gathered information on his movements and searched for him at various locations. Mach Manja was caught after several days of searching along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border.
Following his arrest, the accused was brought before the jurisdictional court. After hearing the matter, the court remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. Police officials stated that further investigation is underway and that all legal procedures would be followed in accordance with the law.
