UP Woman Drinks Acid Mistaken for Packaged Water, Police Probe Underway

A woman is in a fight for her life after she allegedly swallowed acid from a bottle she believed to be packaged drinking water when she was shopping at a jewellery showroom in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. And it could be her chemical exposure to acid that led to the police investigating how a dangerous chemical was in what she knew as an aluminium-lined drinking water bottle.

On July 10, the incident took place on Friday evening, at a jewellery showroom in Arjun Nagar in Hapur. According to a preliminary report, the woman had visited the shop to shop for jewellery when she asked for drinking water after she got thirsty.

To serve the customer, one of the jewellery showroom employees went to a nearby confectionery shop and purchased a sealed bottle of bottled drinking water. The bottle was handed over to the woman without any suspicion.

However, just seconds after opening the bottle and taking a sip, the woman had an acute pain and ran out of the showroom in obvious distress to spit out the liquid. The whole incident was captured on the showroom's CCTV cameras and has since been shared on social media.

Witnesses and family members rushed the woman to a nearby hospital. Due to the chemical burns caused by the substance, doctors referred her to a higher medical facility in Meerut, where she is now receiving specialist treatment. Hospital sources had said her condition was critical.

The jewellery showroom’s caretaker, Denu, said that staff had no reason to suspect anything unusual about the bottle.

According to him, the bottle appeared to be completely sealed when it was collected from the confectionery shop and was handed to the customer in the same condition. He said the showroom employees acted in good faith and had no knowledge that the contents could be dangerous.

Hapur Nagar Kotwali Police arrived at the spot and conducted an investigation. They asked the owner of the confectionery shop about the source of the bottle and the products stored on the premises.

Investigators found several bottles of acid in the confectionery shop, raising serious concerns about storage practices and product handling.

The shop owner said that the bottle had been delivered from the supplier in sealed condition and was sold exactly as it had been stocked. Now investigators are trying to determine whether it was the result of a manufacturing error, improper storage, accidental contamination, or the product being deliberately manipulated.

The police are also reviewing the CCTV footage and tracing the wholesale supply chain of the packaged water bottle to determine the alleged mix-up.

As of now, there is no formal complaint filed by the victim’s family, but statutory proceedings are being taken and investigation is continuing.

The incident has raised new questions about product safety, quality control, and handling of hazardous substances, and officials will be more likely to act once the investigation has established what happened.
