Hassan, Karnataka: Hassan Rural Police have cracked a high-value house burglary case in one day and arrested a woman and her alleged accomplice in connection with the theft of 441.5 grams of gold jewellery worth about ₹56.16 lakh and ₹13.40 lakh in cash from a house in Dodda Honnenahalli village in Hassan taluk.
The burglary took place in broad daylight on Saturday while the family was away from the house, said the police.
Investigators said the homeowner Keshave Gowda and his wife Jayalakshmi had gone to work in their agricultural field. Their son Venugopal had left to drop his child at school, leaving his wife Amrutha alone in the house.
Police say that Amrutha called her friend Paramesh Chetan and asked him to come to her house. Investigators say she removed 441.5 grams of gold jewellery and ₹13.40 lakh in cash from a cupboard and handed them over to him.
According to the investigation, Amrutha left the main entrance unlocked, locked the cattle shed, and later went to the agricultural field to avoid suspicion.
When the family returned home after finishing their work, they discovered the valuables were missing from the cupboard. Police said Amrutha acted as if an unknown burglary had taken place and raised an alarm along with the other family members.
Following the complaint, Hassan Rural Police started an investigation. During questioning and evidence collection, the investigators found inconsistencies that led them to suspect insider involvement.
Amrutha had known Paramesh Chetan for years, and the two had conspired to commit the theft, police allege. Based on the investigation, both Amrutha and Paramesh Chetan have been taken into custody.
Authorities are still investigating to check the sequence of events and recover any remaining stolen property. Police will also investigate whether anyone else was involved in planning or executing the crime.
The case was registered at Hassan Rural Police Station, and more legal proceedings are underway.
The allegations are based on the police investigation. The accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
