At least 62 people have died, and 46 others have been injured after three days of heavy rain triggered flooding and waterlogging in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Monday, Sept. 28.
More than 1,000 houses have also been damaged, and rescue teams have been deployed to move residents from flooded areas to safer places. Schools were closed in some parts of the state, particularly Lucknow, the capital town, as the situation worsened.
The heavy rainfall has caused a lot of people in the state to suffer from the heavy rainfall and has been affecting the lives of people living in the state, disrupting normal life and damaging homes and infrastructure. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged areas and stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams and drains.
Heavy Rain Widespread Flooding
The current spell of rain began on September 25 and was seen to continue over the following days.
The India Meteorological Department’s data showed exceptionally high rainfall in Uttar Pradesh during the period. The state had very high rainfall far above its normal levels and the weather department reported 775% excess rainfall over the period.

Several districts had particularly large departures from their normal rainfall. Waterlogging in urban areas as well as flooding in low-lying and rural areas was caused by the intense rainfall.
The situation also affected transportation and daily life in several places. Residents of Lucknow were seen wading in flooded roads, and the government warned people to be careful in affected areas.
Damage was also done to residential structures due to the heavy rain. In some areas, walls and houses collapsed after heavy rainfall weakened buildings.
In Hardoi, for example, officials reported eight rain-related deaths and damage to about 330 houses. Six of the deaths came from wall or house collapses, and two people died from snake bites during heavy rain.
Rescue Operations Underway
With flooding hitting several districts, local administrations and rescue teams have been working to move people to safer locations.
Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to avoid travelling through flooded roads and to keep away from rapidly flowing water. Such areas can be dangerous because of strong currents, open drains and damaged roads that are not visible under floodwater.
Schools were closed on Monday in parts of the state, including Lucknow, as a precautionary measure amid the continuing weather conditions.
The state has already established extensive flood response infrastructure after earlier flood episodes this monsoon. Hundreds of boats and local divers had been deployed to flood-prone districts and National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force teams were also positioned in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have also been monitoring river levels and issuing weather alerts to residents.
Rainfall Expected To Ease
According to Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, rainfall was expected to decrease from Monday as the weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakened.
However, light rain could persist in eastern and western Uttar Pradesh through Tuesday, so waterlogging and flood issues will still be present in some parts of the state even after the intensity of rainfall has decreased.
The weakening weather system could bring some relief to rescue and relief teams, but the impact of the previous rainfall is expected to continue.
Floodwater can take a long time to recede, especially in low-lying areas and areas where drainage systems are overwhelmed. Authorities are therefore continuing to monitor affected districts and move residents wherever necessary.
Death Toll Figures Continue To Change
The casualty numbers for the recent spell of rain have been changing as district administrations compile and verify reports.
An earlier update from the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner's office had put the death toll at 56, with 46 injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged.
The New Indian Express and Associated Press subsequently reported that the death toll had risen to 62 by Monday.
Later reports on Monday also indicated that the toll was still rising as officials gathered data from additional districts. Therefore, the casualty figure may change as more incidents are reported and verified.
The situation comes after Uttar Pradesh had already experienced several flood-related episodes during the 2026 monsoon season. Earlier in August, authorities reported that 173 villages across 13 districts had been affected by flooding, with thousands of residents moved to safer locations.
For now, authorities remain focused on rescue operations, relief measures and damage assessment across the affected districts.
As rainfall is expected to ease, officials will also have to assess the extent of damage to homes, roads, crops and other infrastructure. The final impact of the latest spell of extreme rainfall is likely to become clearer once floodwaters recede and district-level assessments are completed.
