Six tourists were killed in the Indian State of Himachal Pradesh in a tragic road accident when their vehicle went into a deep gorge. Authorities said on the scene that four other people had been injured in the crash as well.
The car reportedly had landed in a rural stretch of mountainous road, and the driver’s car may have slipped off and crashed into the gorge, killing the people behind the wheel. The precise location and cause of the crash are being researched by local officials at the moment.
Tourists were driving through the hilly area when the crash happened, authorities say. Residents who could hear the loud crash summoned police and emergency services immediately. Emergency rescue crews, police and local volunteers worked at the accident’s site and conducted a hard rescue in the high ground.
Officials reached the wrecked car deep in the gorge by ropes and emergency equipment. Six people in the accident died or were moved to the hospital, officials said. The injured passengers were rescued and transported to the closest hospitals in order to be treated. A few are alleged to be in mortal danger.
Bad roads, sharp curves and perhaps overspeeding may have added to the damage, police say, although the details are unclear about what led to the carnage. Himachal Pradesh has high frequencies of road accidents due to its narrow mountain roads and steep valley terrain.
