An unexpected incident on a BMTC/KSRTC bus in Karnataka has taught us that honesty is still a part of what can help restore humanity. A woman unintentionally forgot her bag on the bus, but the conductor and driver kept the bag safely and returned it.
The passenger had accidentally left her bag on the journey, a situation that might very well have been causing great stress and anxiety. Lost bags, after all, don’t mean loss only of personal items, they also mean loss of the things you’ve worked and earned. And for many, such a loss can be pretty devastating. But, in this instance, the bus staff had recognized the bag that was unattended and kept it safe until it could be returned to its rightful bearer.

The relief wave that washed over the woman came to her when she got her bag back. More than anyone could ever recall the return of a bag; however, the importance for everyone of this story is not just limited to its message. It is still more as honesty and responsibility which should be held up. Public transit staff have a big part to play in people’s daily lives and their integrity gives people safety, dignity depending on how well they feel.

It demonstrates that by treating people with integrity, even in little ways, a person can make a huge difference by restoring faith in what we humans can do to support those who need it and, most crucially, the services that we serve. The conductor and driver deserve kudos that transparency is so little of a rarity that such honesty truly is worth celebrating.
