A 55-year-old police sub-inspector died in a hit-and-run accident in the Tank Bund of Hyderabad when he was on duty for Ganesh idol immersion. It happened as police were running the affairs and traffic during the immersion.
The deceased officer has been identified as K. Venkanna, sub-inspector in Kothagudem Two Town Police Station. He had been sent to Hyderabad as part of the police arrangements for the large-scale Ganesh immersion programme.
Venkanna was crossing the road at Tank Bund when a speeding scooter struck him, police said. The officer was seriously injured and sent to a hospital for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he died of the injuries suffered in the accident.
The incident has brought attention to the risks faced by police personnel deployed on roads and at large public gatherings during festival-related duties. Ganesh idol immersion in Hyderabad consists of large crowds, processions, heavy traffic movement and extensive traffic diversions as police and other emergency personnel are deployed in large numbers.
Kothagudem police confirmed the death and said the officer was performing immersion-related duty at Tank Bund when the accident occurred.

The police said the two-wheeler involved in the accident was being ridden at high speed when it hit the officer. The rider fled the scene after the collision and is currently missing.
He was on immersion duty at Tank Bund when the accident happened. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and died of his injuries, police said.
Investigators are now trying to find and locate the rider responsible for the accident. CCTV cameras from the Tank Bund area and surrounding roads will be examined to determine the sequence of events and identify the vehicle involved.
The officer’s death came during his official duties in the Ganesh immersion plan. Police are frequently deployed in large numbers during large religious processions in Hyderabad to manage traffic and respond to emergencies.
