An IndiGo flight from London to Delhi was forced to turn back to London Heathrow Airport after a technical problem was detected shortly after take-off. A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with more than 250 passengers was involved in the mishap, said an airline spokesman.
According to flight tracking data, the plane left London Heathrow early in the morning and returned to the same airport about an hour later. A technical issue was detected after the flight left and the aircraft was safely landed back at Heathrow, the pilots said.
The airport emergency response was initiated and the aircraft had priority to land. The passengers and crew were able to get off safely at Heathrow.

IndiGo confirmed a technical issue was detected shortly after the aircraft took off from London to New Delhi. The pilots decided to turn the aircraft around as per standard operating procedures, the airline said.
The airline said the aircraft landed safely at London Heathrow Airport and was later taken for maintenance checks. IndiGo had no specific details about the technical problems affecting the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
According to information from London, pilots detected smoke on board after take-off and reported to Air Traffic Control that there was an emergency before returning to Heathrow. IndiGo said the incident was only a technical issue and did not explain the source or the nature of any smoke detected on board.
The flight tracking information showed that the aircraft took off at around 12:40 a.m. IST on Wednesday and returned to Heathrow at around 2 a.m. IST.
Aircraft Undergoing Maintenance Checks
After landing safely, the Boeing 787-9 aircraft was put under maintenance inspection. IndiGo said the aircraft would be able to return to service only after it had been checked and cleared all necessary clearances in order for it to resume operations.
The airline said it was taking steps to minimize the inconvenience to passengers affected by the disruption and arrange hotel accommodation and to put them on the next available flights to Delhi.
The disruption meant passengers had to wait at Heathrow after their trip was interrupted. IndiGo said it would make every effort to make sure that travellers were able to reach their destination in the least time with minimum delay.
The airline said passenger, crew and aircraft safety remained the airline's top priority.
What Happened To The Delhi-Bound Flight?
The exact nature of the technical problem has not been disclosed by IndiGo. The airline’s statement said the problem was identified very soon after departure and that the pilots made the decision to return to Heathrow instead of continuing to Delhi.
The decision allowed the aircraft to land safely at its departure airport, where it could undergo detailed maintenance checks. As a long-haul Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the incident also disrupted a large number of passengers travelling between the UK and India.

The incident comes as IndiGo has retained its dominant position in India’s domestic aviation market. A total of 78.87 lakh passengers were carried in August 2026 according to DGCA data.
IndiGo comprised about 65 per cent of India’s domestic air passenger market during the month. But its share declined from 67.4 per cent in July 2026.
IndiGo is still one of the largest airlines in Indian aviation; it has a very large domestic network and an international presence.
For passengers who were on flight 6E4 to Delhi, the immediate priority is to complete the journey to Delhi after the unexpected return to Heathrow. The plane will return to service only after the airline has passed all maintenance checks and has cleared the necessary clearances.
