A second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room, leading to police investigation. Suicide is likely to be the cause of death the post-mortem examination and investigation will be conducted to establish.
According to police officials, the student was discovered unconscious in his hostel room after students in the hostel reported to the hostel administration when he was not responding for a long period of time. Emergency services were immediately contacted, and he was rushed to medical attention where doctors declared him dead.
Powai Police Station officials arrived at the IIT Bombay campus soon after receiving information about the incident. A case of accidental death has been registered as per standard legal procedure, and investigation of the student's death is ongoing.
Police said no foul play has been found. Officers are investigating classmates, hostel staff, and close friends to know what caused the incident. The student’s mobile phone and other items can be taken into account in the investigation.
The institute has expressed condolences to the student’s family and friends. IIT Bombay officials are doing everything they can to help the bereaved family and cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
The tragic loss has once again brought into focus the importance of mental health and emotional well-being among students in higher education institutions. Academic pressure, personal difficulties, and emotional stress are often cited by experts as factors that can affect students, and so, early counseling and support services must be provided.
Educational institutions across the country are growing in their mental health facilities as well professional counseling, peer support groups, and wellness programs are among the things that they have built. There is no doubt that making an environment for students to feel safe to approach help will prevent such tragedies.
Police have urged the public and media to avoid speculation until the investigation is completed. The post-mortem results and any forensic examinations are still to be given to determine if there is a cause of death.
As the IIT Bombay community mourns the loss of one of its students, IIT Bombay will offer counseling to students suffering from the incident and will continue to promote mental health awareness on campus.
