IIT Bombay to Open First US Campus at SUNY Old Westbury, Admissions Expected from 2027

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay will be the first institute to set up its first sub-campus in the US at the State University of New York (SUNY). With this move, it will strengthen our academic relationship with the USA and expand the scope of one of India’s top engineering institutions.

The proposed sub-campus will be the first to receive its first batch of students in 2027.

A New Chapter in India-US Academic Collaboration

The announcement was made during a virtual meeting between the Director of IIT Bombay Professor Shireesh Kedare and the President of SUNY Old Westbury Dr. Timothy E. Sams in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The two institutions have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to explore long-term collaboration in engineering, multidisciplinary research, technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging disciplines.

The partnership will foster academic exchanges, collaboration and collaboration of scholars and students and faculty at the two institutions to provide students and faculty from both universities with more opportunities for a better international field.

Focus on AI, Engineering and Emerging Technologies

IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury will jointly develop new academic programmes in the following areas:

• Undergraduate courses. • Postgraduate programmes. • Doctoral and research projects.

With technology and innovation and interdisciplinary research in mind, the curriculum will focus a lot on AI and advanced engineering.

The initiative’s alignment with India’s larger aim of globalising higher education and preparing students for the future technologies.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Welcomes the Initiative

Welcoming the development, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the partnership was a significant milestone in India-US educational cooperation.

He said:

I am pleased to understand the letter of intent between IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury for engineering, multidisciplinary research, technology and other emerging areas of the future.

As the Minister also pointed out these collaborations would enhance India’s global academic profile and create world-class learning and research opportunities for students.

Boost to Global Presence of Indian Higher Education

According to the statement, the partnership will also develop new educational and research opportunities at SUNY Old Westbury’s Long Island campus in New York.

The proposed sub-campus will be a platform for innovation and research, faculty collaboration and student mobility between India and the US.

It also reflects IIT Bombay’s growing international ambitions as it seeks to become a stronger presence in global education and research.

Classes Likely to Begin in 2027

While planning and academic development will continue in the months ahead, the first academic session at IIT Bombay sub-campus is scheduled to take place in 2027.

When the campus is operational, it will offer students a chance to experience the IIT Bombay’s greatness at its peak in the United States, and thus to be a part of international education, research collaboration and technological innovation.

The initiative will be a landmark one for India-US educational relations and will further solidify IIT Bombay as an international institution.
