Balendra Shah, who was born in Kathmandu in 1990, had studied structural engineering before plunging into rap music. Though he played music that had a social conscience, he was especially beloved among young audiences. For him, connection with folks was as much in the art as in the words and these elements laid the groundwork for his political career. In 2022 he stood as an independent candidate in the mayoral election of Kathmandu and won, becoming the capital's first independent mayor.

He had been elected mayor, Shah’s main themes in his tenure included waste management, urban planning and transparency. His straightforward dialogue and strong use of social media made him relatable to his people, he appeared in public, he said. He became a member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party in 2025, a new political party emerging from below, one that appealed to angry youth in 2025. And it was in 2026 that he became the party’s prime ministerial candidate, riding the wave of Gen‑Z protests demanding accountability and dismissing traditional political elites.

The 2026 general elections in Nepal followed months of turmoil due to political unrest. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli suddenly quit following mass protests and the door was left open for new leaders. RSP quickly surged in power, rising in both direct and proportional representation seats. The party, with Balendra Shah as its face, is now on the scene to make it in position to form the next government.

Shah’s rise is much more than personal accomplishment; it is a generational move. His background as a rapper and engineer makes him different from other politicians. For a lot of young Nepali, he represents hope, honesty, and the rejection of the old political order. His success highlights how culture, youth’s energy and bottom-up activism can disrupt national politics.

Balendra Shah’s rise from rapper to mayor and now to prime ministerial candidate is amazing. He’ll be leading Nepal anytime soon, though no official results have been obtained. It is a tale of the great force of youth forces and the requirement for a new leader in a nation ready to change.
