A woman was allegedly strangled to death at her home in Jhansi's Sipri Bazar neighborhood just hours after she argued with her husband, police said. Her husband, identified as 28-year-old Yash Thakur, is currently absconding and police teams are searching for him.
The deceased woman was identified as Sudha, also known as Shivani. She was from Indergarh in Madhya Pradesh and had been living in Jhansi for around three months.
The family of the woman accuses Yash of killing her and fleeing after allegedly locking the rooms from outside. Police are investigating the circumstances of her death and have registered a case.
The woman was found unconscious at home.
According to the family, Shivani and Yash went to sleep late on Sunday night after an argument. Shivani’s younger sister Muskan, 18, was sleeping in an adjoining room.
Yash allegedly latched the doors of both rooms from outside before leaving the house at night.
At about 9 am on Monday, Shivani's brother Aniket arrived at the house. He found the door to Shivani's room latched from outside and opened it.
Shivani was lying unconscious on the floor. Muskan was still inside the adjoining room, whose door had also been latched from outside.
The family immediately took Shivani to the Medical College. Doctors, however, declared her dead.
Family Accuses Husband of Killing Her
Aniket alleged that marks were visible on Shivani's neck and blood was coming from her ear. He and Muskan accused Yash of killing Shivani before fleeing the house.
The family reported to police that Shivani and Yash argued the previous night. Muskan said Yash allegedly abused her family during the dispute.
Their maternal uncle, Santosh, who lived nearby, intervened and managed to calm Yash down.
Muskan later went to sleep in the adjoining room, while Shivani and Yash remained in the other room.
According to Muskan, the events took a worrying turn in the early hours of Monday morning.
The couple had married around 18 months ago
Shivani first met Yash, who is from Gwalior, via social media about two years ago, Muskan said.
The two fell in love and told their families about their relationship. Their families accepted the marriage, and the couple got married around one-and-a-half years ago.
Shivani initially lived with Yash in Gwalior, Muskan said. But she later moved to Jhansi after Yash allegedly started assaulting her over petty disputes.
Shivani rented a room near Awas Vikas Fauji Tiraha, where her siblings Muskan and Aniket also stayed with her. Yash would occasionally visit her in Jhansi, according to the family.
Dispute After Couple Returned from Gwalior
A day before Raksha Bandhan, Shivani went to Gwalior with her younger brother Kapil. She stayed there for two days before returning to Jhansi with Yash.
Kapil returned to the village, while Shivani and Yash stayed in Jhansi.
Muskan said the couple argued on Sunday night. She alleged that Yash abused her family during the dispute before their maternal uncle intervened.
Later, Muskan went to sleep in the adjoining room.
According to her account, sometime around 1.30 am to 2 am, Yash asked for his bag, saying he needed to take some belongings. After receiving the bag, he allegedly latched the door from outside.
Muskan said she tried to open her own door around 5 am because she needed to use the bathroom, but she could not get out.
She then called out to Shivani and Yash for around half an hour. When she received no response, she returned to sleep.

Post-Mortem Confirms Strangulation
CO Ramveer Singh said an injury mark was visible on Shivani's neck when police examined her. No other injuries were initially found.
Her body was sent for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death. A two-doctor panel later conducted the examination.
According to the doctors, Shivani had been strangled to death. Five injuries were reportedly found on her neck and face.
Police suspect that a rope or a piece of clothing may have been used to strangle her. The exact circumstances and sequence of events will be established as the investigation progresses.
Police Search For Absconding Husband
Yash Thakur remains absconding, and police teams are searching for him.
Investigators are examining the family members' statements and other evidence to establish what happened inside the house after the argument.
Police will also determine the circumstances under which the doors were allegedly latched from outside and when Yash left the house.
The post-mortem findings have established strangulation as the reported cause of death, while further investigation is underway to establish responsibility and the full sequence of events.
