The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was very noisy on Friday, September 25, 2026 after BJP legislators protested against a resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to restore Jammu and Kashmir to full statehood.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved the resolution after Question Hour. The resolution called for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The resolution also referred to resolutions passed by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2000 and another resolution passed in November 2024.
According to reports, the BJP members objected particularly to the reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution. BJP legislators said they would not allow a discussion on autonomy in the House.
BJP MLAs Enter Well of the House
Following the introduction of the resolution, BJP legislators rose from their seats and began raising slogans. Some BJP members entered the Well of the House and tore copies of the resolution, according to reports.
Slogans including “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” were raised by BJP members, while National Conference and Congress members had slogans to support the restoration of statehood.
The exchange of slogans continued despite appeals from Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to keep the peace.
House Adjourned Amid Uproar
As the disruption went on, the Speaker intervened and adjourned the Assembly for 30 minutes.
Local news organisations reported that the immediate adjournment was for half an hour. Hence descriptions that the House was “adjourned till September 28” should be considered carefully.
The Assembly's autumn session is scheduled until September 30. From the provisional calendar, September 28 had already been allocated for Private Members' Bills.

Political Disagreement Over Statehood
