Oracle’s ambitious $18 billion data centre project in New Mexico is getting further uncertain after it filed a force majeure provision. The sprawling campus, which is called Project Jupiter, is being built to house software and computation equipment for Oracle’s wider AI goals including OpenAI and Stargate.
The force majeure notice does not mean that Oracle has cancelled the project or is walking away from its role as the primary tenant. Instead, it is believed that the move is a contractual move that may provide Oracle with protection if circumstances outside of its control prevent the data centre from being operational on time.
Project Jupiter will be operational in 2028. However, the project has been struggling with power availability, infrastructure development and permits. Oracle has maintained that the development is on schedule, and the project developer has also stated that the force majeure notice does not affect the financial commitments for the multi-year project.
What Is Oracle’s Project Jupiter?
Project Jupiter is an ambitious data centre campus on approximately 1,400 acres in southern New Mexico. This facility will accommodate massive computing power requirements, with a planned power capacity of at least 2.45 gigawatts.
