Joida taluk in Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka has been hit with heavy rainfall over the past few days, and the local administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
The order was issued by the Joida Tahsildar after heavy rainfall and continuous downpours caused streams, rivulets, and other water bodies to overflow and increased the risk to students and the public.
Holiday Declared for Educational Institutions
Due to persistent rainfall and the possibility of waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas, the Tahsildar announced a holiday for all government, aided and private schools and colleges in Joida taluk.
As a result of this decision, the safety of students, teachers, and staff (especially in villages where transportation has been affected by the increasing water level) has been ensured.
Streams Overflow after Continuous Rain
Heavy rainfall has made several streams and small rivers in Joida too swollen, with water flowing above normal levels in many places. Residents reported overflowing water bodies and extremely difficult travel conditions, especially in the interior villages near the forested area in the Western Ghats.
So authorities have advised people to avoid crossing overflowing bridges, causeways, and flooded roads until water levels recede.
Ghats Region receives Intense Rainfall
The ghat region of Uttara Kannada continues to experience intense monsoon showers. Continuous rainfall has increased the risk of landslides, falling trees, and road blockages in vulnerable areas.
The weather is closely monitored, and the residents of areas near rivers and streams should be on alert, they said.

The district administration has appealed to the public to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
- Stay away from overflowing streams and rivers.
- Follow official weather advisories.
- Ensure children's safety during the holiday.
- Call local authorities if there’s an emergency.
Given that the monsoon is still active in coastal and Malnad areas of Karnataka, authorities are also expected to keep track of rainfall and will continue to monitor and issue advisories if weather conditions get worse.
