A 50-year-old woman was reportedly hit to death by her own son, as per the news, in a chilling, distressing incident in Kannur district, Kerala. It's a story from Peravoor that rocked the state and once again illustrated the horrible price drug addiction takes on families.

The victim, Geethamma, was reportedly attacked by her son, Christy, following a row over his allegedly abusive drug use. This mother had been advising her son to stop using drugs and live a healthier lifestyle, according to initial reports. But that act of intervening appears to have precipitated an aggressive response.

Christy is alleged to have slit her throat to kill his mother brutally, the police said. The attack, which somehow happened in their home, shocked the people in the area at the savagery of the crime. Neighbours with no idea of rising pressure in the home described the attack with such incredulity.

Geethamma, among many other items, was a member of a local women’s wing of a political union, socially known in the community, and was involved in political discussions of locals. Her death has devastated her family and appalled those who once knew her as responsible and caring.

It was an improbable tale, after all, the accused was not running from the crime. Christy, instead, is said to have entered a police station nearby to confess to having killed his mother. He eventually turned himself in to the police and confessed. A police officer arrested him and went to work examining him.

Authorities are now looking at how those circumstances came to pass, including the level of drug use that the accused used and whether there have been any violent ruffled feathers since they entered this home. Officials are also likely to conduct medical and psychological evaluations of the accused as part of the inquiry.

What the case highlights, however, is a continued cycle of substance abuse that often carries a wider ripple effect. Addiction can bring an emotional toll on families, experts caution and frequently causes tragic results not only for those who do suffer. The focus should be on combatting it, educating, rehabilitating programs and intervening, which can help prevent such episodes.

So, while the investigation was ongoing, the focus was on what led to this heinous act, to making sure that this was justice for the victim, and the right circumstances. The tragedy is a very vivid example of how a person’s personal issues, such as addiction, can escalate to irreversible severity if left unchecked.
