Bengaluru: Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj has called for a statewide Karnataka bandh on August 13 for the Kannada people and other pro-Kannada organisations to unite around the Kannada community to hold a statewide Kannada bandh in Bangalore on August 13.
In the Kannada media and social media we can see that many organisations have already started preparing for the bandh.
The bandh has been called for 80% reservation in private sector jobs for Kannadigas. Vatal Nagaraj has repeatedly claimed that local youth need to have more opportunities in Karnataka to work in industries and private companies that exist in the state.
When Vatal Nagaraj told us about the proposed protest, he said the bandh is a move to draw the attention of the state and the central government towards long-standing demands for employment, language and the rights of Kannada-speaking people.
He also appealed to traders, transport unions, schools, labor organizations and the general public to join them in the movement.
Some Kannada organisations are discussing their participation and coordinating district-level preparations. If the bandh gets widespread support, normal life in parts of Karnataka might be affected. Public transport services, business establishments, educational institutions and commercial activities can be disrupted depending on the level of participation.
But authorities will be closely monitoring the situation. And like before statewide protests, Karnataka Police and district administration would have to make sure security arrangements to protect law and order.
But the government has not yet made any official response to the bandh call or a firm policy.
Local people have repeatedly identified an appetite for more job opportunities in Karnataka and various organisations have argued that companies operating in the state should focus on local candidates. Such measures would reduce unemployment among Karnataka’s youth and enhance the local economy.
Industry representatives have already expressed their concerns about mandatory reservation policies, saying recruitment should be based on skill availability and business needs as well.
Meanwhile, the state’s problem of how to balance local labor force with industrial development and the balance between local jobs versus industrial growth is still a major problem in the state.
Residents should be kept updated through official government announcements and local authorities before planning travel or business activities on August 13. Transport schedules, public services and commercial activities may change depending on whether or not the bandh is in place in each district.
The Karnataka government, transport operators, business associations and the public should decide on the date and how to respond.
The extent to which the bandh will be participated will be a big part of the impact on daily life in the state.
