Earlier, the state had made it mandatory for children to complete 6 years of age to be eligible for admission into Class 1. However, following multiple appeals and representations from parents, the government has now decided to grant a 60-day relaxation in the age requirement.

With this exemption, children aged 5 years and 10 months will now be allowed to enroll in Class 1, ensuring that many students who narrowly missed the previous cutoff are not forced to lose an academic year.

Minister Madhu Bangarappa also clarified that necessary amendments will be made to the Karnataka Education Act to formalize this change. In addition, updates will be implemented in the education department’s digital systems to ensure smooth processing of admissions under the revised criteria.

The issue had also impacted admissions for pre-primary classes such as LKG and UKG, where parents faced similar difficulties due to rigid age rules. The minister assured the Assembly that changes will be introduced to address these challenges as well, ensuring a more flexible and parent-friendly system.

During the session, Arvind Bellad urged the government to make this relaxation a mandatory legal provision to avoid confusion in the future and ensure uniform implementation across schools. Responding to this, the Education Minister stated that the department would soon issue an official order and take necessary steps to enforce the revised norms.

This decision is expected to benefit thousands of families across Karnataka and bring greater clarity to the school admission process. It also reflects the government’s willingness to adapt policies based on public feedback and practical challenges faced by parents.

An official notification regarding the revised admission rules is likely to be released soon, providing detailed guidelines for schools and parents ahead of the upcoming academic cycle.
