The recommendation is currently for a proposal only and will need to be approved by the Karnataka Government before any changes are made.

Why has the recommendation been made?

According to reports, the committee believes Buddhism has played a significant role in Karnataka’s history, culture, and heritage. The recommendation is intended to acknowledge the religion's past and to reinforce equality and promote inclusiveness.

The committee has suggested slightly modifying the lyrics of the anthem to include a reference to Buddhism alongside some of the religions mentioned in the anthem.

No Official Change Yet

While the proposal has been made, the lyrics of the Karnataka state anthem have not been changed officially.

The suggestion is now under the government's consideration, and any amendment would need formal approval through the appropriate administrative process before it could be included in the officially recognised version of the anthem.

Until such approval is granted, the current version of Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate remains the official state anthem.

About the Karnataka State Anthem

Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate was written by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu (Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa), one of Karnataka's most celebrated literary figures.

The anthem has long been considered a symbol of Karnataka’s language, heritage, traditions, and unity and is sung at government functions, educational institutions, and public events.

Due to its cultural significance, any attempt to modify its lyrics is likely to be widely discussed and debated.

Public Discussion Expected

The committee’s recommendation has already been discussed by scholars, cultural organisations, political leaders, and the public.

The proponents of such a proposal contend that recognising Buddhism is in line with Karnataka's rich history of Buddhism and promotes inclusiveness.

Some say changes to a well-known literary work should be considered carefully in terms of historical, cultural, and emotional significance.

All decisions will be made by the Karnataka Government after the committee has considered the recommendations and, if necessary, consulted with the relevant parties.

What happens next?

If the state government goes along with the committee's recommendation, the proposal could move forward through the appropriate administrative steps, with the proposed version of the anthem to be officially notified.

If the government does not approve the recommendation, then the current version of the anthem will be retained.

Until an official decision is made, the proposal is still being considered and has not yet been made government policy.
