A disturbing video (from Hirehalli near Challakere in Karnataka's Chitradurga district) has also gone viral on social media and shows a man handling a live cobra in an extremely dangerous manner. The video has not been independently verified but its portrayal has raised concerns about the dangers of people who touch snakes in a dangerous way.
The man is seen repeatedly holding and playing with an Indian cobra, one of the most venomous snake species in the country, in the video. There is no one to intervene immediately; you can hear the bystanders react as the incident takes place.
And there’s a lot of criticism online on the video; some people say it is an act so rash that the animal rights laws should be enforced.
Wildlife experts have repeatedly warned that handling snakes without proper training is extremely dangerous. Cobras are protected under India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and capturing, possessing, harassing or relocating them without authorization can attract legal action. Snake rescue operations are only to be carried out by trained rescuers or forest department personnel.
Experts also warn you not to assume that snakes are “calm” simply because they are not striking. Reptiles will react unpredictably when stressed or cornered and even experienced snake handlers use specialized equipment and follow strict safety protocols to minimize risks.
To humans, that behaviour can kill the animal far more than it does us. Touching, lifting or repeatedly disturbing a snake can cause stress and injury, and defensive behaviour that can lead to a bite of the snake will be worse.
The viral video has once again raised awareness of wildlife conservation. Snakes are integral to ecological balance and should never be used to make social media content, conservationists say.
According to the police, no official statement has been issued to confirm the location of the incident and who is shown in the video. Until the evidence is verified, any speculation on social media (such as that the man was under the influence of alcohol) should be treated accordingly.
Wildlife officials advise that anyone who sees a snake should be at a safe distance and should contact the local Forest Department or an authorized snake rescuer immediately rather than try to catch, handle or provoke the snake.
The viral footage serves as a stark reminder that one reckless decision can endanger human life and protected wildlife. It is not only the safest way to treat wild animals from a distance but also the right and legal one.
