New Delhi: New Delhi has seen another political confrontation as AAP national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced today that he will lead an E20 protest march with around 100 people to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. But Delhi Police denied permission for the demonstration over security concerns and law and order concerns.
The proposed march has only amplified the existing political friction between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP and both sides are accusing each other of trying to politicize administrative issues.
AAP leaders say the protest is aimed at bringing attention to issues that the party feels haven’t received enough attention from the central government. Kejriwal will lead a delegation to the Prime Minister to submit a memorandum to present their demands and call for immediate action.
And although the permission was denied, senior AAP leaders are still committed to the demonstration and that the protest will be peaceful and democratic, they said.
Police Deny Permission
Delhi Police officials have refused permission for the march, saying that allowing the marchers to arrive at the Prime Minister’s house would pose a considerable security challenge.
Authorities have advised organizers to hold their demonstration at protest sites as opposed to marching in high-security areas in the capital’s high-security zones. They have also fortified the security around the Prime Minister’s residence with more police officers in place in case there is a breach of security.
Officials have also warned that any attempt to violate prohibitory orders or enter restricted areas may bring legal action under applicable laws.

AAP Stands Firm
AAP leaders have criticized the denial of permission saying peaceful protest is a democratic right guaranteed under the Constitution. Party spokespersons alleged the government had been suppressing dissent and curbing the voices of the opposition.
Arvind Kejriwal has always said that the intention of the march is not confrontation but to raise public awareness and to bring it forth in a democratic way. The party leaders estimated that only 100 people would be gathering to keep the event orderly.
The party’s workers should keep their heads down and not do anything that could lead to a clash with law enforcement agencies, they said.
Political Reactions
The planned protest has drawn reactions from all sides and BJP leaders have accused AAP of staging political drama for media attention, saying that security protocols surrounding the Prime Minister’s residence cannot be compromised.
