Search operations have resumed in Kerala for three fishermen who have been missing since separate boat accidents along the state’s coast.
The three men disappeared in incidents reported near Neendakara, Vizhinjam and Muthalapozhi and a search by the government and local fishermen is on in search of them.
The missing fishermen were identified as Gautam Krishna, 26, John, 54, and Shijin, 32. The families are waiting for news on the fishermen and search teams are still searching coastal waters and nearby waters.
Gautam Krishna, a resident of Puthenthura, went missing after a fishing boat capsized near Neendakara on July 31. His father Radhakrishnan and grandfather Rajeevan, who were also on the boat, died in the accident. Rescuers are still trying to track down Gautam after the mishap.
One incident was also reported off the Vizhinjam coast, where 54-year-old John from Pulluvila was missing after a fishing boat was lost in an accident.

Coastal police, the Coast Guard, and local fishermen have been involved in the search operation.
The third missing fisherman, Shijin, 32, disappeared after a fishing boat capsized near Muthalapozhi. Fisheries Department Marine Enforcement Wing officials are working with the search in the area.
Families of the missing fishermen have been at the forefront of protests that have also brought the search to life.
In Gautam Krishna’s case, more Coastal Police boats have been brought into the operation. Coast Guard helicopters and drones are also being used to survey areas that may be difficult to reach by boats.
Local fishermen are a key part of the search efforts. They know the sea as well as fishing routes and the local currents and have helped rescue teams cover more land than ever.
Shijin’s family’s wait has been particularly difficult. Relatives protested near the Anchuthengu Coastal Police Station and demanded the search for him be intensified. Based on this, local fishermen were involved in the search.
The incidents have once again highlighted the dangers faced by Kerala’s fishing community.
Most fishermen are working in adverse sea conditions and strong currents, rough waters, and difficult coastal terrain can make rescue operations more difficult.
The issue is also political with the Opposition questioning the pace of the search operations. The DYFI held a protest at the Kollam Collectorate, while the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council called for stronger search-and-rescue arrangements for fishermen.
For the families of Gautam Krishna, John, and Shijin, the search remains a matter of urgent concern. Rescuers are still trying and still hope the three fishermen will be found and brought back safely.
