A major road accident was narrowly averted after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch close to Mugalkhod village in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district on Friday. All passengers on board the bus survived the mishap but suffered moderate injuries.
As reported by passengers and witnesses, the KSRTC bus was travelling from Kolhapur in Maharashtra to Mudhol in Karnataka when the accident occurred near Mugalkhod village. Such a route is known to be congested on weekends, and the close call was shocking to those who experienced it.
The accident was said to have been because of a suspected axle failure, causing the driver to lose control of the bus. Within seconds, the bus veered off the highway and into a roadside ditch before it stopped, and the bus could have been worse had it overturned. The abrupt and unexpected event understandably shook the passengers and was probably a fear-based panic as the bus veered off course.
Three passengers suffered injuries in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Residents and friends who were quick to get involved and who were ready to help in the rescue rushed to the site immediately after the accident took place. The quick action of people to get the injured ones treated ensured that they were saved.
The injured passengers were quickly transported to a hospital to receive medical attention, and hospital officials confirmed that the injuries were minor. All three passengers were reported to be in stable condition, so their families and friends were relieved at least.
The Mudhol Police Station was notified and arrived at the scene of the accident very soon after receiving the distressing information. Police officers examined the bus, directed traffic to avoid any further accidents, and began to investigate the accident. This investigation will help establish the facts of the incident and hold people to account.
After the accident, the bus will be investigated to see if axle failure was indeed the cause of the mishap. Technical inspections will probably be conducted in the course of the investigation to determine any possible mechanical defects that could have played a role in the accident.
The accident briefly disrupted traffic along the busy route as recovery work was organized and rescue operations were carried out. Traffic was delayed, and drivers in the area were advised to find alternative routes while the situation was being managed.
KSRTC will be conducting its own internal investigation of the circumstances of the accident and will review the maintenance records of the bus that was involved in the crash, taking precautionary measures to prevent the same situation in the future.
Despite the crash being minor, it’s a stark reminder of the importance of regular vehicle inspections and timely maintenance, especially for public transport buses on long-distance routes where the stakes are much higher. The need for rigorous checks and adherence to safety protocols cannot be overstated, because they are the lifeblood of passengers and drivers alike.
The police have officially registered the case, and more information and facts about this alarming event are being gathered; further investigations are being conducted.
