A tragic and shocking road accident near Kundgol in Karnataka’s Dharwad district on Wednesday claimed the life of a bus passenger and left others traumatised. A state transport bus passenger was allegedly leaning his head out of a window when a tipper lorry passing alongside the vehicle struck him.
According to early information, the victim was on a government transport bus between Hubballi and Lakshmeshwar. The victim was sitting in the last row of the bus when the fatal incident occurred, said the police.
Police sources said the passenger extended his head outside the bus window, reportedly to spit. A tipper lorry behind or alongside the bus came dangerously close to the vehicle. The man's head collided with the lorry, causing catastrophic injuries.
The impact was so severe that the victim died instantly at the scene. The accident was horrifying to witness; the force of the collision had caused catastrophic trauma, witnesses said. The sudden nature of the incident sent shockwaves through the bus, leaving passengers in a state of panic and disbelief.
Some passengers pleaded with the driver to stop the bus and screamed for the driver to stop once they realised what was happening. The bus stopped, and local authorities were informed about what had happened. Emergency services and police officers arrived at the scene immediately and began to respond and investigate.
The accident happened in the jurisdiction of Kundgol Rural Police Station. Officers went to the spot, conducted an inspection, and initiated legal procedures related to the case. The body was shifted for post-mortem examination.
As of this date, the identity of the deceased had not been confirmed. Police are still trying to identify the victim and notify family members. The age of the victim, place of residence, and travel plan are to be found out later.
Investigators are also looking at the circumstances behind the accident: the distance between the bus and the tipper lorry, and whether any traffic or safety violations may have contributed to the tragedy. Statements from the bus driver, passengers, and lorry driver are likely to be part of the investigation.
It is just the kind of dangerous thing that people do when they lean out of moving vehicles. Road safety experts advise us to never extend our heads, hands, or body parts from the window of our vehicle, as even a small error in distance can lead to fatal consequences.
The gruesome accident has sparked discussions on passenger safety awareness and the need for better enforcement of safety measures in public transport vehicles. Authorities have repeatedly advised that passengers remain seated properly and avoid risky behaviour while buses are in motion.
The tragic death has left fellow passengers feeling deeply shaken, many of whom witnessed the incident firsthand. Police officials have advised people to exercise caution while travelling and to strictly follow safety standards to prevent similar incidents.
