No More Wasted LPG: How Liquid LPG Off-Take Technology Helps Use Almost Every Drop of Gas in Cylinders

A large amount of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is then kept at the bottom of gas cylinders even as they appear empty. To overcome this issue, state-owned oil marketing companies in India are working on a new technology called Liquid LPG Off-take Technology.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are promoting this technology to commercial and industrial customers, especially those who use large quantities of LPG on a daily basis.

Why does LPG stay in cylinders?

In a conventional LPG cylinder setup, the fuel is supplied in the form of vapour. As the cylinder is used, the liquid LPG inside naturally vaporizes and is consumed by burners or industrial equipment.

But due to pressure changes, temperature changes, and vapour withdrawal limitations, a small amount of LPG can remain in the cylinder even when it cannot produce enough vapour for regular use. So, users often replace cylinders before the remaining LPG can be fully used.

What is liquid LPG Off-take technology?

Liquid LPG Off-Take Technology has changed how LPG is extracted from the cylinder.

Instead of drawing LPG in its vapour state, the system injects the fuel in its liquid form with special equipment. The liquid LPG is then passed through a vaporizer, where it is converted to gas and then used to run burners or industrial systems.

This allows the cylinder to be emptied much more completely, leaving very little unused LPG inside.

How the Technology Works

The system is made of specialized components to safely handle LPG in liquid form.

The process generally involves:

  • Liquid LPG is removed instantly from the cylinder.
  • The liquid is passed through a vaporizer.
  • The vaporizer converts the liquid to gas.
  • The gas is supplied to the appliance or industrial equipment at the appropriate pressure.

By first extracting LPG in liquid form, users can use almost all of the fuel in the cylinder's liquid form.

Key Benefits

Liquid LPG Off-Take Technology offers several advantages:

  • Reduces LPG wastage by using almost the entire contents of the cylinder.
  • Energy efficiency increases, and LPG consumption decreases.
  • Lower operating costs for companies that require high gas consumption.
  • Greater reliability of gas supply, especially during periods of high demand.
  • Lower cylinder replacement frequency, lower downtime, and increased productivity.

These benefits make the technology especially valuable for businesses that rely on continuous LPG supplies.

Who Can benefit?

The technology is primarily for commercial and industrial users whose use of LPG is relatively high.

Potential beneficiaries include:

Hotels and restaurants
Catering companies
Food processing units
Dairy industries
Chemical manufacturing plants
Pharmaceutical industries
Metal fabrication units
Large manufacturing facilities
Commercial kitchens
Institutional canteens

For these users, even a minimal reduction in fuel wastage can result in big cost savings over time.

Is it suitable for domestic LPG users?

At present, liquid LPG Off-take Technology is mainly being promoted for commercial and industrial applications that use large-capacity LPG cylinders and have specialized equipment to safely handle liquid LPG.

As such, domestic households typically use standard vapour-withdrawal cylinders, and the new system is not yet suitable for typical residential cooking systems.

A step towards greater energy efficiency

Technology like Liquid LPG Off-Take is an ideal way to maximize fuel utilization in the industry.

The technology will help businesses extract nearly every drop of LPG from each cylinder and help them to reduce waste, reduce expenses, and improve operational efficiency. It is in line with the wider campaign for resource conservation, sustainable energy usage, and energy efficiency in both commercial and industrial businesses.

With state oil companies enthusiastically promoting its adoption, Liquid LPG Off-Take Technology can be an important innovation in the industry, looking to develop more intelligent and efficient LPG consumption.
