In a significant move aimed at managing rising demand and ensuring fair distribution, India is set to implement major changes to its domestic LPG usage rules starting May 1, 2026. The new guidelines will be rolled out by leading public sector oil companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (Indane), Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum.
These changes come amid growing concerns over increased LPG consumption across the country and supply chain challenges that have affected timely delivery to existing customers. Authorities say the measures are designed to prioritize current users and reduce misuse.
Temporary Halt on New LPG Connections
One of the most notable changes is the suspension of new LPG connections for at least one month. Starting May 1, no new domestic LPG connections will be issued across India. Officials have clarified that this is a temporary measure aimed at stabilizing supply and ensuring uninterrupted service for existing consumers. Those planning to apply for new connections will need to wait until further announcements.
Mandatory Gap Between Cylinder Bookings
The government has also introduced strict limits on how frequently consumers can book LPG refills. In urban areas, there must be a minimum gap of 25 days between two bookings, while in rural areas, the gap has been extended to 45 days. This move is expected to encourage responsible usage and prevent hoarding. However, it may pose challenges for larger households that rely heavily on LPG for daily cooking.
OTP-Based Cylinder Delivery Becomes Compulsory
To enhance transparency and curb fraudulent practices, the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system will now be mandatory. Under this system, customers will receive a one-time password (OTP) on their registered mobile number when a cylinder is out for delivery. The cylinder will only be handed over after the OTP is verified by the delivery personnel. Failure to provide the OTP will result in non-delivery, making it essential for consumers to keep their registered contact details updated.
Possible Changes in LPG Prices
As per the standard practice, LPG prices are revised on the first day of every month. Industry experts suggest that there could be a price hike following recent elections, although no official confirmation has been made yet. Consumers are advised to stay updated on price announcements.
Crackdown on Misuse of Domestic Cylinders
Authorities are also tightening enforcement against the illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes. Strict inspections and raids have already been reported in cities like Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. Those found misusing subsidized cylinders in hotels or businesses may face penalties and legal action.
Alternative Options Suggested
Given the possibility of supply constraints and rising costs, experts are encouraging households to explore alternatives such as piped natural gas (PNG) or electric cooking appliances. These options could help reduce dependency on LPG and provide more stable long-term solutions.
The new rules will apply nationwide, impacting millions of LPG users. While the measures may cause temporary inconvenience, authorities maintain that they are necessary to ensure fair distribution and prevent system abuse during a period of high demand.
