A horrific road accident in Madhya Pradesh caused the death of at least 15 workers and some serious injuries after a pickup truck overturned and collided with an SUV on the road.
Today, panic and carnage followed at the wreck scene. A rough account says the labourers travelling in a pickup truck lost control and the driver overturned the truck on the highway. It wasn’t until a few minutes later, however, that an overturned pickup truck collided with an approaching SUV in the horrific crash.
Witnesses said the collision was very serious and the passengers were trapped inside the crashed vehicles. Police and emergency services were called in, as were people living in the area. Rescue teams took immediate action, rescuing injured victims and removing corpses from the rubble.
Officials announced that 15 people had died in the crash, which had primarily involved labourers travelling in the pickup truck. Scores of injured victims were taken to the nearest hospitals, and several were reported to be seriously in danger. Authorities are worried that, given that the injuries are serious enough, the death toll could rise further.
Officials say they're currently investigating the exact cause of the crash. There are early indications that overspeeding and driver negligence were involved, but officials are also investigating whether the vehicle itself was overloaded. At the accident scene, senior district officials visited to speak to individuals about rescue operations.
As the authorities began trying to identify all the dead bodies and notify their families, the dead bodies were taken for post-mortem analysis. Local traffic was heavily disrupted for hours as damaged vehicles were cleared and emergency units cleared the road. At the crash scene, cars were crushed and strewn across the highway where it occurred, as is seen in a video.
Much of India still has labourers trapped in overcrowded vehicles that are still involved in road accidents due to the errors of the drivers. It is a refrain for many safety professionals for goods hauliers or pickup trucks, who operate in cities that require long trips, the report states. Politicians and officials expressed condolences to the families of these victims.
