An incident in Badlapur, Maharashtra, has sent a shockwave through the local community as a woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her husband because of an argument over buying a new saree. It happened in Shirgaon, east of Badlapur, and the allegations are worrying.
According to reports, the deceased was Hareram Singh, who lived with his wife Sunita Devi and their young son. Police sources said the couple argued on Tuesday evening after Sunita asked her husband to buy her a new saree. Hareram refused and got into a heated fight.
What began as a domestic dispute quickly turned violent. Sunita allegedly attacked her husband by throwing a pressure cooker at him from the kitchen. Hareram lost consciousness and collapsed after the blow, the police said. Police also said that the attack didn't stop there and Sunita strangled her husband to death later.
Hareram Singh was a specially-abled person, making the case even more tragic. The physical condition of Hareram Singh may have prevented him from effectively defending himself during the alleged attack, said the police.
Following the incident, Sunita attempted to mislead investigators by claiming that her husband had died of natural causes. But police investigated the death in further detail.
The couple’s seven-year-old son, who was at the residence when the incident occurred, was the key witness, police said. During questioning, the child admitted to having information that contradicted his mother’s initial version of events, they said. Police were able to conclude that there was enough reason to suspect foul play from the child’s statement and other evidence gathered during the investigation, they said.
Sunita Devi was arrested and taken to court and remanded to judicial custody. There is a lot of talk at the local level about the police investigation, and residents are shocked by everything that happened.
