A shocking assault on a police officer has been reported in Mangaluru, where at night a police constable was attacked by youths in the early hours of Saturday. Police are currently searching for the suspects, and CCTV cameras have recorded the incident occurring at the Urva Police Station.
On early analysis, the incident occurred around 2 am near the Kodikal locality in Urva police limits. On a normal patrol day-to-day basis, the constable had apparently noticed a two-wheeler running at a fast pace down the road. Officers had a suspicion of reckless and odd behaviour and ordered the bike riders to halt and check, police said.
However, the riders supposedly ignored the police commands and ran away from the scene. Officials said the suspects refused to stop them several times and fled by riding at breakneck speeds. The same, reportedly bike-borne youths returned to the scene soon after on that same road.
Immediately, the pillion rider reportedly attacked a constable as they approached the police. According to police authorities, the attacker dealt a blow to the constable with a piece of a cement sheet or some other hard object. It was said the blow landed on the police officer who was the target of the attack, sparing the other officers.
Well, thank goodness the constable was spared from serious suffering and sustained non-life‐threatening injuries. The whole event was witnessed on the adjacent CCTV cameras, which provided important visual evidence that helped investigators. The video reportedly shows the suspects getting on the motorcycle, the moment of contact, and fleeing after the attack.

They fled the scene on their motorcycle at high speeds before police could catch up with them after the attack. The attackers may have intentionally returned, authorities said, after fleeing officers’ checks (which suggests the attackers were purposefully attacking law enforcement officers).
The attack prompted grave concerns about police staff officers doing their public safety jobs. Armed assaults on patrol and enforcement personnel are considered serious offences, police said, and senior officers are reportedly treating the situation seriously.
The police are examining CCTV footage from the scene to trace the suspects and the location of the motorcycle involved in the crime. Police are also examining local surveillance cameras and gathering statements from witnesses in an effort to piece together the timeline. A criminal case has now been opened at Urva Police Station, and the arrest of the youths is in progress.
Officials said harsh action would be taken to deter those responsible for the attack. The incident serves as a wake-up call for the night patrolmen and women to receive adequate training, so they understand what standards to expect in the workplace and not to repeat them.
