She finds herself in crisis because of an interfaith marriage, legal troubles and claims based on reporting in the media about what happened, as well as gossip. Monalisa Bhosle was once a trader who made rudraksha beads at the religious gathering, so she became popular all over the country because of her work.
Monalisa, who was said to have married a man named Furman Khan this year, has since been in the news. The marriage, held at a temple in March, was among local political leaders, reportedly under police supervision. Yet what was supposed to be a consensual union soon devolved into a bitter dispute that was felt in her family and the legal system.
For her part, Monalisa’s family members fiercely objected to the marriage, arguing that she was still a minor at the time. The relationship was also accused of being controversial and even called “love jihad,” one of the terms often used in politically-charged interfaith relationship debates in India.
There were allegations, adding another layer of drama to the case. This then culminated in a probe by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), which stated that Monalisa was about 16 years old when she married. As a result of this discovery, Furman Khan’s case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which is aimed at having a strict legal framework to protect minors from sexual abuse and exploitation.
Furman also went to the police and said Monalisa had disappeared. Investigators conducted the investigation. But Furman said this week that Monalisa is pregnant, which means they can’t take her questioning. The authorities are currently validating this assertion, utilising medical documentation, before they initiate additional lawsuits.
Monalisa had said before that she had been pressured by her family to marry a relative against her will. Furman had gone to extreme lengths to give her emotional support in this very hard time; eventually, he started dating her and married her “on the strength of his feeling of love,” she said.
The conflicting stories of the dispute, the family’s accusations versus Monalisa’s own words, in fact, have complicated the case further. A complaint from Monalisa’s father against the Madhya Pradesh police was submitted, resulting in their further investigation of the case. And the Kerala High Court at the same time granted interim relief and kept Furman Khan’s arrest stayed until 20 May – giving time for a ruling to be rendered in a matter of case.
Monalisa was now not only in national headlines for her revelation but also for the sensitive issues it posed interfaith marriage, age of consent, individual versus family right and legal lines. The authorities have said that the prosecution is considering the issues and that decisions will be made based on verified proof, such as documents proving their years and medical histories. The case is going to be scrutinised closely for years to come in the context of many agencies.
From viral celebrity to legal woes: From that day, what was an ordinary gathering of people, though now it turned out to become one of legal and social complications driven by embedded social contradictions. What will be the outcome at this point remains to be seen for some time, but at the same time, for now, Monalisa Bhosle and her decision to throw away her life are what is in view.
