With the Christmas season on the way and the demand for sweets going up big across the state, the Karnataka Food Department is focusing on sweet manufacturing and retailing in the state. Food safety officers are conducting inspections at all central sweet manufacturing plants and shops in Bengaluru and also in other parts of Karnataka to ensure that all food safety and hygiene standards are being followed.
The inspections are to check the quality of sweets being prepared and sold to consumers during the festival season. Production processes, cleanliness of production facilities, storage arrangements and the quality of raw materials used in preparing different types of sweets are also to be evaluated, officials said.
The increased surveillance happens during sweet shops and manufacturing units’ peak when production can be greatly increased due to consumer demand. Food quality, hygiene, and safety standards are being monitored closely by authorities in order to ensure increased production does not compromise.
Health Care, Quality And Hygiene
Food safety teams are checking whether sweet manufacturers are following the prescribed food safety regulations during inspections. Production facilities are particularly hygiene-oriented when it comes to cooking and preparation areas, equipment and storage.
More than anything else, officials are reviewing the way finished products and raw materials are stored. Proper storage is particularly important for sweets and other food items which would not be well served if they are stored in an unsound environment.
In addition to the quality of ingredients used in sweet preparation, another major area of inspection is the raw materials used by manufacturers, which are being checked by authorities for safety and for consumption.
Labelling And Expiry Details Under Scanner
Food safety officials are also checking the labels on packaged sweets and other food products. Information such as manufacturing details, expiry or best-before dates and other mandatory declarations are being examined during inspections.
The department’s checks are to ensure that consumers receive sufficient information about the products they purchase, particularly packaged sweets that might be stored or consumed over a period of time.
They are also looking for violations of food handling, storage, and production practices. Any deficiencies found in inspections could lead to further action in line with food safety regulations.
Special Vigil During Festival Season
Festivals typically result in an enormous surge of demand for sweets, and manufacturers and retailers are therefore increasing production and stock. While this meets consumer demand, authorities say the rush may lead to adulteration, bad hygiene practices or the sale of unsafe food.
The department has therefore ramped up surveillance to prevent adulterated or unsafe sweets from being sold and manufactured. Manufacturers and sellers should not simply accept higher demand and lower quality or food safety standards, officials said.
The inspections are being conducted in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, both at sweet manufacturing facilities and sales outlets.
Action Against Violations
Food safety authorities have warned that establishments that do not comply with prescribed hygiene and food safety requirements could face action under the relevant provisions of the food safety law.
The inspections are, ultimately, to protect the consumers at a time when the consumption of sweets is robust. And so authorities are keeping a close eye on production facilities, ingredients, storage conditions, hygiene practices and labelling to ensure that, in the end, sweets reaching consumers are safe and meet the required standards.
With the festive season expected to bring a surge in sweet sales, consumers are also being urged to be cautious when purchasing sweets and other food products. That intensified inspections are part of efforts to ensure that celebrations don’t come at the cost of food safety and public health.
